MSP harvests Reddawn onion sets |
15/07/2010 |
Onion packing station MSP loaded up a harvest of Reddawn onion sets last Wednesday. “Right from the word go, the onion sets grew well and always had a head start on our regular onion sets. With this variety we had a fine large size and a great yield halfway through July. Heavy rainfall was forecast so we didn’t leave the crop on the field for too long.” days Rinus Moerdijk.

Troy onion sets harvested! |
05/07/2010 |
| Harvesting Troy onion sets has started. Last Monday, Marco van ’t Westeinde harvested his Troy onion sets. The onions were planted in November and were very small when the winter started. Despite this, the onions had no trouble withstanding the heavy frosts of last winter. In addition there were hardly any signs of bolting in the field. This is a huge difference to the traditional winter onions sets with 100% Japanese ‘blood’. The genetic makeup of Troy shows more resemblance to spring onion sets, so the quality of the product is far superior. |

02/04/2010 |
The crop is starting to recover quickly after the cold winter. Plants that were completely or partially frozen are recovering and onions are even appearing that were still dormant shortly after the planting period and didn’t start developing immediately. Bejo representative Rob van den Bos is satisfied with the condition of Troy at this moment.

Onion set growers are making the most of the good weather |
10/03/2010 |
| This week growers all over the Netherlands are busy planting their onion sets. Most of the fields have been recently ploughed. They are quickly dried by the wind and the sun, and then they are ready for the planting machine. Fields ploughed a while ago are often still too wet to be planted at this point. The photographs below show onions being planted at Schouwen-Duiveland. These planting machines belong to the contractors Van de Velde and Bevelander. |

Broer sees growing demand for one-year-old onion sets |
04/03/2010 |
| Andijk - Employees of Broer in Andijk, North Holland, inspect first year onion sets for quality. The first year onion sets are graded into three sizes, says director Siem Beers. ‘The demand for first year onion sets is rising thanks to the good prices for table onions. Growers of onion sets hope to benefit in the early summer from a lack of seed onions. We supply first year onion sets until mid-April. About ninety percent of our production goes to more than forty mainly European counties.’ |

22/02/2010 |
Agricultural trade journal Boerderij recently published an article by Nico Rodenburg about the farm run by brothers Mariën and André Bos in Ouwerkerk. Their choice fell on the onion set variety Troy, which is supplied under the Quality inside label.

Troy onion sets going into the ground at Schouwen |
30/09/2009 |
The Bos brothers in Ouwerkerk planted out their Troy onion sets last Tuesday. Over the past two years they have had excellent results with this relatively new variety. Troy is genetically similar to the early spring onion sets Jagro and Jetset. These varieties usually provide a lot of bolters if they are planted before the winter. That is absolutely not the case with Troy.

Harvesting red spring onion sets has started! |
15/07/2009 |
| Onion packing station Monie in Nieuwdorp harvested the first red onion sets on Tuesday 14 July. ‘At the moment there is good demand for medium sized bulbs, as Egyptian red onions are starting to run out,’ says Kees Smalheer, Monie’s cultivation advisor. After last weekend’s rain we had to wait a while for the soil to dry out enough. As more thunderstorms were forecast we decided to load the onions as well immediately after lifting. |

Neck rot and second year onion sets |
08/07/2009 |
Neck rot is a highly unpredictable infection. It often only becomes apparent afterwards that a crop is infected. Neck rot (botrytis allii) frequently occurs in early harvested second year onion sets. When the causes are examined afterwards, it usually turns out that the following two facts have not been taken sufficiently into account during harvesting and drying:
1. the fungus is always present, and 2. it emerges when the conditions are right. |

02/07/2009 |
Today onion packing station JWK will be packaging the onion set variety Troy ready for sales to European supermarkets. Troy onion sets have a strong bolting tolerance and are therefore also extremely suitable for planting before the winter. The onions being packed by JWK were planted in mid-October by grower Arnold Timmerman in Kattendijke.

Quality inside in Romania |
25/03/2009 |
| The second year onion set has been cultivated on a large scale for many years in Eastern Europe. Many hectares are traditionally devoted to growing the Stuttgarter onion set in particular. The Quality inside programme is also gaining in popularity in this part of Europe, including in Romania. To raise awareness of the programme and the range amongst growers there, a Quality inside trial field was planted in Buzău last Saturday, March 21st. In mid-July the |
| onion sets will be mature and ready for assessment by the growers. |

Quality inside in Greece |
12/03/2009 |
This photograph proves that Greece is not always synonymous with sunshine and sweltering temperatures. Bejo’s representative recently came across this field of Troy onion sets just above Athens in the south of the country. Could there possibly be a better example of an onion suitable for overwintering than this snowy scene?

Storage advice for first year onion sets |
04/02/2009 |
| Last weekend early onion sets were planted at various locations in the South West of the Netherlands. The good weather made conditions ideal. Ploughing was often followed immediately by planting. Planting has been halted at the moment due to wintry showers. Onion sets already ordered from the supplier will have to be stored at the grower’s premises for a while. Do not leave the onions in the big bags, but store them in crates and place them in a row in front of a fan. |
